Meet The Maker: Robyn Smith

Who are you, where are you from and what do you make?

Hi, I’m Robyn Smith, I’m a jeweller and maker based in South London.

What inspires you?

Traditional craft techniques and the politics of archaic objects. I also really love Picasso’s ceramics, they’re really playful and it reminds me to have fun when I’m making new work.

What is your workshop luxury?

Sainsburys Salted Caramel 4 pack of cookies and eating all of them.

Your favourite studio lunch?

Empanadas from the Columbian cafe round the corner.

Best spot in the British Isles?

I’m definitely biased but Leigh-on-Sea, where I grew up, is a beautiful spot. It’s an old fishing town with views out over the Thames Estuary, and the worn-down seaside aesthetic of weathered ropes and buoys has always been a source of inspiration in my work. 

What do you find challenging about being a creative?

Not being able to switch off.

What would you like to learn next?

At the moment I’m doing the self-directed course Make Your Own Masters so it feels like I’m constantly learning new skills and methods of ideas development. Right now I’m exploring Jesmonite and working out ways of pouring it without air bubbles!
