I’m Emily Georgina Jones, I’m based in Whitby, North Yorkshire – which is my hometown, but I studied for my degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing in London. I work from home making jewellery from recycled sterling silver and gold.
I’ve always found it hard to put my ‘inspiration’ into words, I think it has to do with the interplay between objects and emotions. It doesn’t have to be jewellery related. I can get inspiration from an ornate garden fence, an interesting conversation, or reading a book. Whatever it is, I try to come away with an idea to give shape to that intangible feeling.
The tool I use most often is the biggest luxury in my workshop, and its my rolling mill. Its a small set of steel rollers that you crank by hand. It allows me to recycle my own studio scrap, after melting the metal into an ingot I’m able to make wire and sheet in specific shapes and thickness, I don’t know how I ever worked without it!
I’ll have to admit that I don’t really stop to eat in the middle of the day, but there are plenty of coffee breaks.
North Yorkshire! Its a beautiful place to live. But also the view from Black Beck Tarn looking down over Buttermere and Crummock water in late summer, thats my favourite holiday spot
The pressure to always be making the next best thing, when in reality it can take me weeks or even months to feel ready to make something new.
I’ve got a few old books on cutting and carving natural stones. I’d need quite a bit more space and equipment, but it would be super satisfying to be able to make pieces entirely from scratch like that.
I like seeing friends and family, but I also like my alone time. Nothing beats a chilled evening in my own company slathering myself in lotions and watching a good film.
Wet Leg, Dry Cleaning, Self Esteem, Porij, Amyl and The Sniffers.
When somebody leaves a lovely review, or sends me a message saying they love their new jewellery. It honestly makes me skip around the house for the day.
Honey and miso glazed chicken bao buns with sweet pot fries and sambal cucumber – yes, thats a hello fresh recipe because thats all I cook.
Cosey fanny tutti, Joan Didion, Clarice Lispector.
I’m choosing the custom name banners by Bianco Perry. I’ve had two made for my niece and nephew, and I have a special banner in my bedroom. Jennie is just the best, brightest person ever.
Choosing just one is hard! I’m a winter baby but I love basking in the sun. I wouldn’t want to live in one season forever though.
I’d pick one of the hollow form pieces. Maybe the hollow ring with gold face. They are soo satisfying to make, challenging, but when they turn out well it’s a great sense of accomplishment. Each piece is hand made, not cast, and constructed so they are hollow inside.
