Who are you, where are you from and what do you make?

My name is Claire and I live in Bristol although I grew up in Kent and went via Brighton, Oxford, and London to get here. I design and make fun homewares – bold lighting, printed textiles and cyanotype prints.

What inspires you?

Simple things like early mornings in nature. More serious things like the brilliance of humankind and how we use materials to create insane things. And visual things like the illustration of Daehyun Kim which stirs something deep.

What is your workshop luxury?

Well I haven’t had a studio outside of my bedroom until quite recently, so my studio  IS my luxury.

Your favourite studio lunch?

Definitely leftover dinner – even better if it’s leftover curry.

Best spot in the British Isles?

Probably Snowdonia, and noticing how my relationship with the place has changed as I’ve got older. We went there a lot as children – Dad had bought a derelict cottage which we camped in. We got marched on long walks in all weathers. Me and my sister would get left behind and when we eventually caught up, Dad was always down to his pants and diving into a freezing cold lake. Now I love the place, rain or shine. I would walk up a mountain every day if I could. It takes your breath away.

What do you find challenging about being a creative?

Having too many ideas and not enough time. But also that being creative is an emotional thing and it’s hard to balance your monthly emotional journey with your creative ideas and thoughts. Hard also when you rely on your creativity to earn you a living, then everything suddenly feels very precarious.

What would you like to learn next?

How to face challenging situations in life, I love dreaming up future plans and taking risks. So when stuff gets hard, I normally just get out of there and go headfirst into the next thing. But I think there’s a lot to be said for endurance and seeing things through.

How do you let your hair down?

Long and hilly bike rides with my boyfriend in amazing scenery exploring places you don’t know. Once you’ve built up enough fitness and stamina it’s incredible where the bike can take you and how it can make you feel.  I’m also be a bit of an adrenaline junkie and love theme parks, but it’s hard to persuade friends to come with me now!

What are you listening to at the moment?

Quite a lot of fun 90s. But also Suzanne Kraft, Kate Bush, and Neil Young. Podcasts? Grounded with Louis Theroux

What makes you feel well chuffed?

Making a great sourdough bread
